Post Impressionism in Pastels with life models - 3 days - TASMANIA - JULY 2024 with Judy Drew

Join renowned Australian pastel artist Judy Drew for 3 days at Artable's new venue Enclave in Winnaleah, Tasmania. You can book a room and meal package, or travel in each day. Judy will be teaching in pastel and charcoal from life over 3 days in our studio with the first day dedicated to still life and days 2 and 3 dedicated to working from the dressed model (model fees included).

DAY ONE

WORKING FROM STILL LIFE

The day will begin with a brief talk and demonstration drawing along with in depth discussion around how to set up your still life and Judy's process around this. This will be about fine tuning your powers of observation. We will look at how different ways of lighting can create a sense of drama to the work. If you are a beginner you can work in charcoal and if you are experienced in pastel you can work in colour.

DAY TWO
WORKING IN CHARCOAL WITH A LIFE MODEL

Day two is around Judy's process on portraiture. You will work in charcoal to evaluate tone and values. We will also see the exciting effect using a kneadable Rubber can have when used to create variations in the tones and the especially the charcoal surface. Although aiming for a likeness, the exercise will be more about creating a work which shows emotion and drama.

DAY THREE
WORKING IN COLOUR/PASTEL WITH A LIFE MODEL

If you don't have experience with pastel or pastel materials, you can stick to charcoal.

The day will begin with a brief talk and demonstration of using pastel on black paper. Again we will be fine tuning our powers of observation and will look at the influence of Japanese art on The Post Impressionists. Their observations on how flattened areas of colour, elimination of shadows and an emphasis on colour and light can create works which were refreshing and vibrant.

Please note that this is not a beginners workshop. We recommend that you attend if you have had some experience with drawing prior. It is perfect for those of you who have not had the chance to work from life before and for those with some drawing experience wanting to extend their portraiture skills and/or pastel skills.

Meet the Teach

Judy Drew

Australian painter Judy Drew was born in 1951. Her passion for the Post-Impressionism period and the influence of Japanese art in the late 1880’s, along with her creative sense of colour and form, allow Judy to create beautiful and modern work, even though Judy’s work is contemporary she retains a touch of sentiment in all her pieces. Her rich and textured pastels convey her emotion and love for this medium creating refreshing and strong compositional work, which is sensitive to the subject matter. Judy’s love for figurative work and her sensitive portraits of the Bougainville people gained local and international attention whilst living and working on Bougainville Island in papua New Guinea from 1976-1984. After living in Papua New Guinea, Judy returned to Melbourne and continued to concentrate on her figurative work and still life compositions. She studied Graphic Art at Prahran College of Art in Melbourne and has been recognized with numerous Awards including the Omega Contemporary Art Prize and the Portrait Prize, Melbourne Savage Club. With sell-out exhibitions, Judy’s reputation continues to soar as one of Australia’s most talented and exciting female artists.
