Acrylic & Mixed Media Abstract Gardens - 2 days - MELBOURNE - MAY 2024 with Susan Nethercote

If learning to paint beautiful abstract florals is something you'd like to know more about, or if you are an artist looking for a fresh approach then come and join Susan in this weekend workshop.  Susan will share her inspiration while showing you how to have a regular fun art practice that nurtures the growth of your authentic creative style.    

In this two-day workshop Susan Nethercote will walk you through her unique approach to painting colourful, expressive, and abstracted gardens in acrylics and mixed media that come straight from the heart.  She will guide you step by step through all the stages of creating successful abstract botanical paintings.  From loose, lush, expressive backgrounds, to creating abstracted botanical forms, Susan will guide you through all the layers of paint and mixed media and help you to bring play and experimentation to your art to create paintings that truly express ‘the garden within’.

In this exclusive 2-day workshop you’ll learn:

How to create lush, emotive backgrounds for your paintings

How to use colour theory effectively to create maximum impact

How to use value contrast in abstract botanical works

How to layer mixed media paintings correctly

How to find your unique lexicon of mark making to create your abstract botanicals.

How to use a variety of mixed media including acrylic paint, oil pastels, wax pastels, paint markers.

There are 2 flights of stairs and NO LIFT.  Please have this in mind if you have mobility issues.

There are cafes within walking distance and a fridge and microwave on site if you'd prefer to bring your own.

Meet the Teach

Susan Nethercote

Susan Nethercote is an abstract floral and botanical artist based in Ballarat, Australia. Following her degree with Honours in Fine Art, Susan lectured and tutored at Melbourne University before moving on to establish the independent clothing label Manque Design which she successfully operated for 15 years.  After having children and moving to Ballarat, Susan quickly established a prolific painting practice.

In addition to maintaining a significant online presence, Susan sells her artwork globally, licenses to various lifestyle, fashion, and decor brands worldwide, hosts the ‘Studio Insider Art’ podcast with over 227,000 listens, and teaches via online classes and live workshops. In 2018 she hosted an artists’ retreat in the south of France. Her first solo exhibition in 2022, ‘Autumnal Dreamscapes’ at the Old Butcher’s Shop Gallery in Ballarat was a sell-out success and she has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions. Susan’s second solo show will take place at the Art Gallery of Ballarat in March/April 2024. Susan was the 2022/23 winner of the AGES Society Art Prize. In 2024 she is commencing her MA in Visual Art at Federation University.
