Pastels & Travel Journals in Switzerland - 10 Days OCT 2024 USD pricing with Lyn Diefenbach

We have hand-crafted a 10 day art experience like no other. Some of you will work in pastel, others will enjoy creating holiday illustrations - the choice is yours! Nestled in the rolling hills of the Appenzell, surrounded by forests and pastures and the sound of cow bells, we are staying in a traditional swiss-style hotel for an authentic Swiss experience. Switzerland holds breath-taking beauty and in addition to daily art instruction from one of Australia's best art teachers in our own art studio, we will be immersing ourselves in the Swiss culture staying in the heart of the old town of Apenzell. Beautiful journeys to the surrounding countryside, local tours and even an exhilarating ride down the side of a hill in a summer toboggan! You can choose to work in pastel or watercolour (travel journal style) and prepare yourself for the trip of a lifetime.

It's time to join an Artable retreat in Switzerland! We have put together a truly unique workshop with one of Australia's most loved tutors. Switzerland is renowned for its natural beauty, rolling green hills, traditional wooden buildings, all things cheese and generous hospitality. We are taking you to the old traditional township of Appenzell, where the painted houses and gentle waterways will have you spellbound.

Our dates coincide with an incredible cow parade through the village where you will see the Swiss farmers all dressed up in their traditional costumes and the cows dressed in flowers. It is an unmissable event!

You can choose what genre you would like to spend your time working on, portraits, florals, landscape...it's up to you! This special workshop is for learning the art of using pastels, working from your own images and guided by Lyn as well as keeping a travel journal which Lyn will show you how to do.

We have our own art studio for the 10 days as well as trips to the surrounding countryside for some outdoor fun.

We are staying in the heart of Appenzell, a traditional Swiss village with the most incredible painted houses. There are beautiful walks near our hotel to truly experience the beauty of the area before or after class and to soak in the fresh Swiss air and the sound of cow bells.

We have included all breakfasts, 5 lunches and 5 dinners in this workshop so that you can visit the many restaurants and food experiences in the area.

If you are keen to come on your own, don't worry, we have many people that join us on their own. We will allocate you to a share room or if you wish to enjoy a room to yourself, you can pay a $1000USD single supplement.

To join us you need to pay a $200AUD non-refundable deposit via the link to the right. We will be in contact in June 2023 to collect the balance. Please note that cancellation fees apply to all Artable retreats.

We look forward to welcoming you to a wonderful creative holiday.

Lyn Diefenbach Pastel Portrait Workshop

Materials List

NB Do not pre-draw your portrait as the drawing and achieving a good likeness is a significant part of the workshop.

Pastels

Paper - 2 x sheets Canson MITIENTES. Colour examples: Flannel Grey, Oyster, Sand, Bisque, Eggshell. Orange or Tobacco for darker skin. Any greyed-off colour works. Or you may use Art Spectrum Colorfix, Art Spectrum Smooth, UART 600 or any of the other sanded papers if you prefer.

Pastels - Bring what you have. Girault and Rembrandt have got some particularly good portrait colours.

Backing Board - have at least 4 sheets of other pastel paper to pad the board

¼” Angle Shader Brush NEEF 995 - this is to brush away unwanted pastel.

Willow Charcoal

Bulldog Clips

Tissues

Easel

Paper towels

Kneadable eraser

Subject Photos make sure these are large, clear images preferably with a good play of light and dark. If you are doing your own printing from a computer, make sure that you use photo quality paper NOT plain paper.

Lyn Diefenbach Pastel Potential - Florals

Materials List

Florals:

NB for florals: Please come with your composition already drawn up in a PALE pastel pencil or a colour pertinent to your bloom. Focus your composition more on one or two blooms so that it is more of a portrait of a flower.

Paper - 2 sheets of UART 600 or white Ampersand Pastelbord (these are available from softpastels.com.au) or white Canson Mi-Tex or white Arts Spectrum Colorfix Supertooth

Pastels - bring what you have. Include colours suitable to your subject.

Backing Board - Not required for Ampersand Pastelbord

For UART 600 put another sheet of the UART 600 beneath the one you are working on, especially if your backing board is foam core.

For Canson and AS make sure that these have a padded surface with at least 2 or 3 sheets of pastel paper behind. Ensure your padding doesn’t create ripples on the surface

¼” Angle Shader Brush NEEF 995 - this is to brush away unwanted pastel.

Bulldog Clips

Easel

Paper towels

Kneadable eraser

Drop Sheet

Reference Photos make sure these are large, clear images preferably with a good play of light and dark. If you are doing your own printing from a computer, make sure that you use photo quality paper NOT plain paper.
