Day 1 - You'll be transferring an image onto canvas, followed by an underpainting first in black ink and ink markers.

Next is the under painting using a tonal rendering in oil paint, black, white, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and a fast drying medium. You'll be focusing on form rather than local colour, for example shadows and bone structure rather than blush, eye colour or hair colour.

Day 2 - We capture local colour, the rainbow of shades
and hues in skin, reflected light and lip colour.

This process uses transparent colour to glaze, opaque colour
and white to add density to translucent skin. Alizarin crimson, vermillion, Indian yellow, ultramarine blue and lead white. We don't use black or earth colours in this layer.

The second day is the final layer and refining.

Colour palette and material choices are specific to a classically realist portrait technique and draw from a range of paint makers.

You will experience the difference between transparent and opaque pigments, historical and contemporary colours and processes used by portrait artists from Rembrandt to Robert Hannaford.

A structured realist technique is a great way to begin
approaching portraiture, even if the long-term aim is expressive/abstracted portraits. Seeing and understanding the face first is vital, to then knowing what to distort or remove and still convey a likeness.

Images will be provided as references and to trace, and Megan can also work with your own images. Examples and explanations will be provided in advance of the class. Images will need to be headshots printed at 30x30cm in black and white and colour reference image on an iPad/tablet or A3 colour print (not on a phone).

Examples of the workshop process is shown in above images for this workshop.
