Join USA artist Kim Moore as she shares her tips and tools for creating successful landscape artworks from life amidst the stunning scenery of Tyalgum. The Tyalgum Art Retreat is an event in which the arts community of the region are able to gather and both inspire and learn from each other, with workshops over the 5 days, participants are able to create and gain knowledge from a handful of well renowned artists.

Working En Plein-AIr (from the landscape, from life) & Training Your Memory and Observation Skills is the chance to work with USA artist Kim Moore whilst she is on Australian soil! Kim is renowned for being a slow, steady, patient teacher with clear instruction and a calm manner that students love.

From Kim:

With the current debate about the use of photographs in creating artwork, I would like to challenge you to rely more on your memory and observation skills. Photography can be a useful tool AFTER you have learned to paint from life.

Taking full advantage of the beauty of Tyalgum we will paint en plein air, sketch and make color notes. Developing these skills will be helpful when creating paintings from your observations.

Painting from your memory, a sketch and color notes will help you create impactful paintings. Learn to include the important elements while leaving out details that do not contribute to the success of your painting. Learning about your subject matter will be of much more value to you than a photograph!

Artists should bring charcoal pencils in several tones- light, medium and dark. The Art Spectrum Smooth paper works beautifully for sketching. ( I prefer the neutral mid tones). I will be working in Pastel (I use Great American Artworks), but artists are welcome to work in the medium of their choice as the concepts learnt apply to all mediums and are perfect for any landscape artist.
