One of the only complaints we ever hear from our students is that they can't pick which workshop to do and wish that they could do all of them - well now you can! Well....sort of :)
We have been on the hunt for a workshop facility where we could nestle you all into some quiet & comfortable accommodation and let us bring the artists to you. We finally found a beautiful organic farm nestled into the hills behind Byron Bay with a large, light-filled studio, just waiting for us to get creative.
Each day we bring you a new artist and medium to work with and all of the materials that you need to create.
That's right, you need NO MATERIALS at all.
We are bringing you the teachers, the materials, the meals & the accommodation so that you can simply come along and enjoy a creative holiday without the hassle. Just make sure you leave some room to take home your gorgeous masterpieces at the end of the retreat.
Wed 15 May - Watercolour with Anne

You will be working with 4 of our best:
Anne Smerdon (WATERCOLOUR), owner of The Artory will be teaching you watercolour.
We have designed the perfect 1 day workshop where you can get the basics out of the way so that you can enjoy the art of watercolour. There are a few tips and tricks you need to learn to get confident with using this medium and this 1 day workshop is designed to cover them all.
Anne is a Gold Coast artist represented by galleries in Australia, New York and the UK. Specialising in watercolour and drawing, Anne's illustrative style stems from her background in fashion and architecture.
From a very early age, Anne was noted as a creative-to-watch and was the winner of a Children's Creative Art Scholarship from the Queensland Art Gallery at the age of 11. In more recent times, Anne was the winner of the Element Eden Global Artist Search in the Fine Art category and also the winner of the Emerging Artist Award at the Trinity CollegeArt Award. She has also been a finalist in numerous art awards, including the Border ArtPrize, St Sebastians Emerging Artist Award and the Minister's Art Award.
John Turton (ACRYLICS) will be teaching you acrylics.
This workshop will move you away from straight 'copying' and into the 'Imagined Landscape'. You will have the opportunity to work in acrylic on canvas with John's guidance.
John Turton holds an array of awards, residencies and teaching experience spanning 4 decades. A master of capturing the essence of the Australian landscape, John's artworks hang in numerous galleries including The National Gallery in Victoria and numerous Council, Private and Overseas collections including Robert Holmes A Court (WA). John has been published in a number of magazines and now brings his wealth of knowledge of the Australian landscape to you.
Jan Lawnikanis (INKS) will be teaching you inks. You will be playing with Alcohol inks on Yupo paper & other mediums that handle inks well. Inks are full of pure pigment and once you learn what mediums to add to them, are a fun and exciting way to create unique works of art.
Jan has taught regular art classes on the Gold Coast for the past 22 years and tutored over 70 workshops in various locations around Queensland and NSW. Students in all mediums have praised Jan for her teaching skills and this has gained her an excellent reputation with all ages.
In her personal art career, Jan’s beautifully presented work in various mediums has won many first prizes and other awards. Her commissions range from school theatre sets to a set for the QLD Conservatory of Music, 40 artworks for an apartment building, 15 artworks for an office floor, paintings for a restaurant as well as school murals and private works for client’s homes.
Jan has been the featured artist in Australian Artist Magazine, with 5 full-length articles. Other publications include the Paradise Magazine-GC Bulletin, Art Newsflash, the International Watercolour Institute catalogue, the Coloured Pencil Magazine and the Australian Coloured Pencil Network.
Manuela Pilz (DRAWING) will be teaching you drawing. Throughout the day Manuela will be taking you through our hugely successful beginner's drawing course to help you learn the ropes to get started (or come back to!) drawing.
Manuela has been a practising artist and teacher for more than thirty years working and exhibiting in the UK, Spain, and Australia. Manuela has been our key drawing teacher for many years now and is renowned for her patience and structured process that beginners can learn. Amongst her other achievements, most recently she has won first prize for the Master Skill Building Challenge at Watts Atelier in the USA. In 2017 Manuela fulfilled a lifelong dream to study in Italy and attended the Florence Academy of Art allowing her to work with artists trained in the classical skills that Italy is renowned for. Her initial training was at Sheffield Hallam University (UK) where she studied a Fine Art BA Hons course and it is there that she discovered a passion for working with figurative art.
“Every time I go to Europe or attend an amazing course here, I am itching to get back to my students and share what I have learnt. I believe it is part of an artist’s life to “pass it on”. There is so much amazing knowledge out there that shouldn’t get lost or forgotten. It needs to be shared.”
